WILMINGTON, N.C. – Justin Bradley tossed his first complete game and UNCW rallied from an early deficit to top VCU, 7-3, and win a key Colonial Athletic Association weekend series on Sunday at Brooks Field. The Seahawks (25-20, 10-8) move into a tie with George Mason for fourth place in the league. The Rams dropped to 24-19-1 and 12-5-1 with the loss.
Bradley (2-0) limited VCU to three runs, two earned, on six hits in UNCW’s first complete game performance since 2008, when Jeff Hatcher went the distance against North Carolina in the NCAA tournament. The Carolina Beach, N.C., native walked three and struck out six while lowering his earned run average to 3.52. [Read more →]

After salvaging the finale of this weekend’s three game set against Northeastern, it all comes down to this week for the UNCW baseball team. It is now, or never.
The Seahawks will be hosting the CAA tournament, but with only the top four teams competing for the automatic NCAA bid, UNCW could be watching and not playing.
It has been a disappointing year so far for the DiamondHawks, who are currently fifth in the standings, and fans will have to hope that they hit their low point this weekend. Northeastern entered the series 0-10 in CAA play and then took games one and two from UNCW. Those were two games the Seahawks certainly could have used. With Sunday’s 4-2 win behind the starting pitching of Ashley High alum Justin Bradley, UNCW improves to 8-7 in conference play, but sits on the outside looking in.
The Seahawks have their first home weekend series in some time, but it won’t be a walk in the park. UNCW will welcome VCU which sits atop the CAA standings. It is a three game series UNCW must win… anything less than two out of three from here on out means the Hawks could be left out of the CAA Tourney.
UNCW has the opportunity to build some momentum on Tuesday as East Carolina comes to town, starting the eight game homestand. It would be a tough win, but a big win… a victory to get confidence going.
This is do or die time and while the Seahawks will enjoy playing at the friendly confines of Brooks Field, the schedule is brutal. Can they step it up? They’ll have to. After playing ECU and VCU, the Hawks host Elon next Tuesday and then have a three game set with Georgia State, one of the teams they could catch to earn their CAA bid.
It is a tough stretch. If UNCW is to be worthy of playing and not watching the CAA Tourney, they will have deserved it beating several good teams along the way. While I’m sure they would rather not be in this hole, this is the week to start digging themselves out.

Quarterbacks Story of NFL Draft: Tebow goes early, Clausen and McCoy still waiting
By Joe Mauceri
More surprising than who was picked in the first round of this year’s NFL draft, was who wasn’t. Despite pre-draft hype Notre Dame Quarterback Jimmy Clausen fell out of the first round. Clausen’s big ego reminded me a lot of Jay Cutler. The sense of entitlement coupled with the lackluster start to the career of Brady Quinn, the last highly touted South Bend quarterback undoubtedly doomed Clausen to the second round.
But now let’s take a look at who was picked and try to predict what it could mean for the team when the season rolls around.
1. Sam Bradford (St. Louis Rams) – The Rams didn’t surprise anyone, going with the pick everyone thought they would. Bradford was a stud…two years ago. Before he got injured it seems like the former Oklahoma Sooner was putting up 50 points a game, every game. I think those numbers and an unreal completion percentage kept Bradford at the top of this draft. Bradford will have a great teammate in the backfield in Stephen Jackson. If Jackson can put up his usual numbers and force 8 in the box it could be a decent first year for Bradford, but the Rams have a lot more work to do on both sides of the ball.
2. Ndamaukong Suh (Detroit Lions)- Is it just me, or do the Lions seem headed in the right direction? Adding some veteran leadership on the defensive line with Kyle Vanden Bosch, Suh will be a force in the middle. Not to mention he’s a good character guy. Even before he was drafted Suh promised the University of Nebraska more than 2 million dollars. With Suh and Stafford Detroit will have a toughness on both sides of the ball.
3. Gerald McCoy (Tampa Bay Buccaneers)- With Aqib Talib and Ronde Barber the Bucs quietly had a very good secondary. But with teams running all over the Bucs it was clear they needed some help up front. No surprise here going with the best defensive tackle on the board. McCoy should be a great fit, but the offense is still a big question mark.
4. Trent Williams (Washington Redskins)- Donovan McNabb can breath a little easier. The Redskins decided to protect their new quarterback. Now McNabb just has to figure out who he is going to throw the ball to. But with Larry Johnson, Clinton Portis, and Willie Parker in the backfield and Shanahan’s zone blocking scheme he might not be throwing much.
5. Eric Berry (Kansas City Chiefs)- S-T-U-D. Berry is a stud. The only reason he wasn’t taken earlier is because he is a safety and for some reason NFL teams don’t like to take safeties early. Berry has Ed Reed talent and will be a ball hawk in the defensive backfield for the Chiefs. But KC still has a lot of work to do…perhaps a Notre Dame QB reunited with his coach in round two? We shall see. [Read more →]

Jesse leads off…
They did what? They took who? C’mmooonnnn….
Let’s get it out of the way, Tim Tebow.
I can’t imagine the Broncos think Tebow is the second best NFL quarterback in the draft, can you say Toby Gehrhart? Seriously, we’ve seen plenty of guys shine under center in college but clearly don’t have the sling to get it done in the NFL. Tebow is Tommy Frazier, or the next Charlie Ward. Nothing more. The Broncos always have found diamonds in the rough, picking up successful running back after running back, they must think Tebow is the next because he certainly aint John Elway.
There were some other head turners… Joe is going to pick up the blog today, he’s got the scoop on round one. On Sunday, we’ve got some time slotted to look at this years NFL Draft winners and losers… that’s Sunday at noon on WWAY.
