Some people are fans of local sports. They keep up with what’s going on in the area.
Others are local sports fans. They are from the area and keep up with sports covered nationally, but don’t know Josh Sheets from Josh Brock, or Benny Moss from Benny B, or Rachel Caricato from Rachel Lloyd. (Sheets is on UNCW basketball team while Brock is a New Hanover High grad now playing golf at UNCW and qualified for the US Open last summer at Bethpage… Benny Moss ...

With Hoggard’s upset of Greenville Rose Friday night, the Mideastern Conference Championships could be sewn up before the end of the regular season.
Coincidentally, the Vikings helped out their cross-town rivals. With a win at Rose on Tuesday, New Hanover would clinch the out-right title, something Ashley has already done on the girls side. [Read more →]
The UNCW mens basketball team was scheduled to fly out early Friday morning. The Seahawks arrived in Delaware late on Friday. They have yet to take the court. [Read more →]
Jesse says: “Dazzling dunks, wicked slapshots, and the post-Benny Moss era is underway.”
Joe says: “Three words, Su-Per Bowl. With the most highlights this side of the Coaches Corner, it’s the Cape Fear Sports Report.”
Yes, Joe knows it is just two words, but didn’t know who was going to win as Mayor Saffo outpicks Joey Vegas, that is after the Mayor gave us the inside scoop on Hammerheads possible return and discussed a riverfront ballpark.

I went to my first Lady Hawks hoop game Thursday night. I knew it had been a tough season, but this team looked like they could play with first place Old Dominion, the team that has won 18 of the last 19 CAA titles.
After trailing for most of the game, they managed to stay within range and mounted a second half comeback. The Hawks tied the score at 52 with about five minutes remaining… the game was theirs for the taking and a big win certainly can sweeten a mostly sour season. [Read more →]
UNCW Athletic Director Kelly Mehrtens has reassigned Benny Moss and named him Special Assistant to the Athletic Director. The two met on Thursday. Moss’ duties will include assistance with and participation in special projects, as determined by Mehrtens.
Due to the incoming weather, UNCW’s game against Delaware has been pushed back to Sunday at noon.
The team left Friday morning on a flight out of here where it will be wet, but headed to where it could be quite white.
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Feb. 4, 2010) – It only took an unprecedented fourth consecutive NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship, but the media finally thinks Jimmie Johnson will defend his crown, according to a NASCARMedia.com preseason media poll.
Incredibly, this isn’t a typical outcome. Only once in the previous five preseason polls has Johnson been tapped as the favorite – in 2005, the last season he didn’t win the championship. [Read more →]
I love the transition times, take the normal excitement and double it.
Transition times always have overlap. The winter sports season is headed down the homestretch while the spring sports season is cranking it up, getting ready to go. The excitement comes from the biggest playoff games which will happen on the hardwood, and is only heightened with the anticipation of what lies ahead on the diamond. [Read more →]

The last straw, the one that broke the camel’s back was Wednesday night’s blow out loss, but clearly, the writing has been on the wall.
After a disappointing 7-22 ‘08-’09 season, Benny Moss was given support by athletic director Kelly Mehrtens, but with the team mired in a mid-season slump, staring at a 7-14 record and another losing year, Moss has been reassigned within the athletic department.
Jim Dallke is hot on the case, he will have the complete story including reaction from campus on Sunday’s Cape Fear Sports Report on at noon on WWAY.
Third-year assistant coach Brooks Lee has been named interim head coach for the remainder of the season, and will make his debut Saturday when UNCW hosts Towson for homecoming.
Moss began his four-year stint as head coach during the 2006-07 season, but after a 41-74 overall record, and 23-45 CAA record, the program will be heading in a different direction. Jerry Wainwright was recently fired at DePaul and many would love to see him return to Trask Coliseum, although no permanent replacement has been officially discussed.
Moss, the seventh coach in UNCW history, joined the Seahawks after serving six seasons as an assistant at UNC Charlotte. The Seahawks finished just 7-22 in his first year on the sidelines, but rebounded with a soled 20-13 ‘07-’08 season.
Hempstead, NY- Junior guard Charles Jenkins (Queens, NY) poured in 24 points, including an eight-point play on one possession in the opening half, and junior forward Greg Washington (Centereach, NY) tied the school record with 10 blocked shots to key Hofstra’s 93-54 wire-to-wire victory over UNC Wilmington in a Colonial Athletic Association matchup Wednesday night at the Mack Sports Complex.
