The UNC Wilmington women’s basketball team has been picked to finish 11th in the 2007-08 Colonial Athletic Association regular season standings, according to a poll released Wednesday during the league’s annual preseason Media Day at the ESPN Zone.
The poll, which consists of input from the CAA’s coaches, sports information directors and news media, tabbed defending champion Old Dominion to repeat. The Lady Monarchs were followed in the voting by James Madison, William & Mary, VCU and Delaware. Picked sixth was Towson, followed by Hofstra, Drexel, Georgia State, Northeastern, UNCW and George Mason.
“With all the talent that the CAA has to offer, it is difficult to determine how the upcoming regular season is going to play out prior to the start of the campaign,” eighth-year head coach Ann Hancock said. “We look forward to the challenge of competing in one of the premier women’s basketball conferences in the country once again in 2007-08.”
Individually, junior Sahsha Taylor was tabbed as an honorable mention section for the preseason all-conference team. A junior from Charlotte, Taylor is the Seahawks top returning scorer (12.4) and rebounder (6.2) from a year ago.
“Sahsha had a solid sophomore campaign and we’re looking forward to her continued development this season,” Hancock said. “She is a standout player in the CAA and is deserving of this recognition.”
The Seahawks open the 2007-08 season Nov. 9 when they host Presbyterian in a 7 p.m. contest at Trask Coliseum.
