Wilmington Senior Softball Teams Have Good Success At State Championships

Three teams from the Wilmington Senior Softball League took part in the N.C. State Senior Games held in Raleigh, and all three won medals.
The 60-64 age group team went undefeated en route to the gold medal. They won all six games including the championship over Hendersonville, N.C. By the score of 16-2 behind the pitching and overall play of Rick Telesco. The teams leading hitters in the six games were, Bill Manley, George Allen, Stan Sholar and Bob Stine. Defensive gems were turned in by Bill Veronica and Remo Rossi.
The 65-69 team won the bronze medal. They fell short of the championship game, but downed the Brunswick Slammers in the consolation game to claim the bronze.
The 70 plus team took second place. They defeated Hendersonville 13-8, Pinehurst 12-5 and Burlington 13-8, but lost the gold medal game by the score of 24-21. They were down 12-0 at one point, but fought back in a slugfest to almost pull it out.
In the series Bob Dempsey had 3 home runs and Ron Sullivan had 10 hits in 15 at bats.
