WILMINGTON, N.C. – Sophomore Seth Frankoff hurled a complete game and UNC Wilmington slammed three first-inning home runs as the Seahawks dealt Wisconsin Milwaukee a 6-3 loss on Saturday at Sessions Stadium.  

 

The Seahawks evened their record at 1-1 while the Panthers dropped to 0-2.

 

Frankoff (1-0) fanned six and allowed three runs in his first career complete game outing. After allowing two runs in the first inning, the righthander retired 14 of the next 16 batters before surrendering a run in the sixth inning.

 

Seniors Jason Appel and Jes Snyder both went 2-for-5 with a homer and two runs batted in for the Seahawks who collected 11 hits on the afternoon against three Panthers hurlers.

 

Senior outfielder Nick Wichser led UWM with two hits and drove in two runs.

 

Junior righthander Andy Hetebrueg (1-0) was chased with two outs in the first inning after allowing five runs on five hits and three walks. Junior reliever Brad Lusti allowed an unearned run over 5 1/3 innings.

 

Home runs off the bats of Appel, Daniel Hargrave and Snyder keyed UNCW’s five-run first inning.

 

The Panthers were able to cut their early deficit to 5-2 in the bottom of the inning. Frankoff hit the leadoff batter and surrendered a double to senior Jesse Hart. Both runners scored on Wicsher’s single to center.

 

UNCW added a run in the third to push its lead to 6-2. Freshman Cody Stanleydoubled off the base of the centerfield wall, moved to third on a throwing error and scored on senior Justin Barefoot’s ground ball to third one batter later.

 

UWM closed out the scoring in the sixth on sophomore Tim Patzman’s single to left center that scored Wicsher, who doubled with one out.

 

The Seahawks wrap up their stay in Jacksonville with a 3 p.m. start Sunday against the host Jacksonville Dolphins.

 

Notes: UNCW now has seven home runs through two games this season … Hargrave moved into eighth place on UNCW career home run list … Hargrave and Appel homers were back-to-back in the first inning … Frankoff’s previous career-high for innings pitched was seven against Campbell (3/20/07) … The Seahawks turned two groundball double plays as Frankoff allowed just five flyball outs to the outfield.
