UNCW Baseball Team 1-2 After Trip To Florida

February 25th, 2008 · No Comments

Senior Matt Dobbins tossed six shutout innings and Thomas Myers went 3-for-3 and drove in three runs as Jacksonville rolled past UNC Wilmington, 9-0, in college baseball action Sunday at Sessions Stadium.

Jacksonville, who has reached the NCAA tournament each of the last two seasons, improved to 3-0 in sweeping the Jacksonville Invitational. The Seahawks, meanwhile, conclude their season opening road trip with a 1-2 mark.

Dobbins, a crafty lefthander, was a model of efficiency, facing just three batters over the minimum, scattering three hits, walking one and striking out two. JU relievers Sean Green, a freshman, and junior Scott Dunlap closed out the shutout, allowing just two base runners over the final three innings.

Myers, a junior outfielder, doubled and homered to pace the JU lineup. Kyle Fleming finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored for the Dolphins who out hit the Seahawks, 14-4.

Junior righthander Brad Holt (0-1) struggled through his 3 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs, four earned, on eight hits, including a pair of home runs.

Seniors Jason AppelDaniel HargraveJes Snyder and sophomore Rhett Miller had hits for UNCW.

Sophomore first baseman Alex Martinez gave JU an early lead with a 3-run homer to left with two-out in the first. Fleming reached safely on a throwing error and Myers followed with a single. Holt retired the next batter, but Martinez launched the first pitch he saw over the left center field wall.

The Dolphins added to their lead in the second on run scoring singles by senior outfielder Kevin Ferreira and Fleming.

Myers extended the lead to 7-0 in the third with 2-run shot to left, his second of the season.

Myers struck again in the sixth with a RBI double to left to make it 8-0 and junior pinch hitter Brad Simmons made it 9-0 with a RBI single.

The Seahawks open their home season on Tuesday with a 4 p.m. start against Elon.

Notes: Hargrave extended his career-long hitting streak to 11 games, dating back to the 2007 season … UNCW used six pitchers for the second time in three games … The bullpen hurled the final 4.2 innings and allowed just two runs … UNCW was homerless for the first time this season.
