Coach Mark Scalf and the UNCW Baseball team will look to the friendly confines of Brooks Field to get them on track as they host Fordham in a four game set over the weekend after their loss Wednesday sunk their record to 1-4.
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Sophomore Richard Jones’ sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh broke a 1-all tie as The Citadel edged UNC Wilmington, 3-1, in a pitcher’s duel Wednesday at Riley Park.
The Bulldogs evened their mark at 2-2 while the Seahawks fell to 1-4 with their third straight loss.
Citadel sophomore Nick Sprowl (1-0) earned the win, needing just two pitches to retire the only batter he faced. Sophomore Matt Reifsnider pitched a perfect ninth for the save.
With the score tied in the seventh, the Bulldogs plated the eventual game-winning run without aid of a hit. Sophomore Matt Simonelli drew a leadoff walk off UNCW freshman reliever Stephen Harrold (0-1), who was tagged with the loss, and moved into scoring position following a walk to senior Chris Swauger, this time by Seahawk freshman reliever Cameron Roth. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners up and Jones lifted a sacrifice fly to center to bring in Simonelli.
Seniors Jason Appel and Mark Carver each had two hits for the Seahawks.
Neither starter figured in the decision. UNCW sophomore Kyle Lewis fanned six in 4 1/3 innings, both career-highs, while allowing one run on five hits and a pair of walks. Citadel sophomore Chris McGuiness stymied the Seahawks with five scoreless innings, allowed four hits and struck out three.
Lewis sailed through the first three innings and pitched out of trouble in the fourth, but the Bulldogs broke through in the fifth on Swauger’s RBI single to center that scored Reifsnider, who led off the inning with a single. Harrold (0-1), though, pitched out of a bases loaded threat by closing out the inning with a ground ball out.
The Seahawks quickly tied the game in the top of the sixth on a RBI single to right by Carver off Citadel reliever Raymond Copenhaver. Appel led off with a single, moved to second following a sacrifice bunt and stole third the next batter.
Sophomore Kyle Jordan pushed The Citadel’s lead to 3-1 with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning.
The Seahawks open a four-game homestand on Friday with a 4 p.m. start against Fordham. Saturday’s game has been changed to a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
Notes: Today’s game was the first between the two teams since the 1994 season … The Citadel now leads the series 7-3 … UNCW stole its first two bases of the season … Hargrave extended his career-long hitting streak to 13 games … After retiring the lead off hitter in each of the first three innings, UNCW failed to do so in the following four innings.
