UNC Wilmington Swimmers Off To Strong Start At CAA Championships

FAIRFAXVa. – Six-time defending men’s champion UNC Wilmington won the Men’s 200 Medley Relay and finished second in the 800 Free Relay as the Seahawks tied with Old Dominion for the an early lead after day one of the Colonial Athletic Association swimming and diving championships Wednesday at the McKay Natatorium. The Lady Seahawks, who finished second a year ago, are in second place after three events.

The 200 Medley Relay of sophomore Andrew Rogers, senior Matt Layne, sophomore Robert Anderson and senior Corey Sturmer posted a first-place time of 1:30.83 setting a new CAA Championship meet record.

The Lady Seahawks gave UNCW a sweep of the opening event as senior Stacie Striplin, sophomore Charlee Eades, sophomore Caitlin Kirsteier and freshman Caroline Huber clocled in at 1:44.28, just missing setting its own CAA record.

UNCW senior Annalisa Nieuwsma finished eighth with 226.95 points in the Women’s 3-Meter dive.

In the final event of the first session, UNCW finished fifth in the women’s 800 Free Relay (7:36.68) while the men fashioned a time of 6:43.65 to finish second.

Session two of the championships begins on Thursday at 10 a.m.
