HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Senior Daniel Hargrave tied a school record with three home runs and sophomore Seth Frankoff hurled seven scoreless innings as UNC Wilmington topped Hofstra, 14-2, in Colonial Athletic Association baseball action Friday at University Field.UNCW improved to 11-4 overall with their 10th consecutive win and remained perfect in conference action at 4-0. The Pride, meanwhile, dropped to 4-9 and 0-4.Frankoff stayed perfect on the season at 3-0 after striking out three and scattering four hits over his seven innings of work.Senior Brody Fontaine (0-2) allowed six runs, five earned, on nine hits in four innings of work for the Pride in taking the loss.Joining Hargrave, who went 3-for-4 and drove in four runs, with a multiple home run game was senior Shane French who finished 3-for-4 with two dingers and a career-high five runs batted in. Seniors Jason Appel and Nate Hall added two hits apiece.Hargrave gave the Seahawks a 1-0 lead with his fifth homer of the season in the top of the first and sophomore Mike Rooney extended it to 2-0 with a RBI fielder’s choice in the second.UNCW went back to the long ball in the third when Hargrave slammed his second homer of the day leading off the inning. A double steal with Appel scoring on the front end pushed UNCW’s lead to 4-0.Hargrave struck again in the fourth with a 2-run shot to left with two outs.French delivered a two-run shot of his own in the fifth off HU reliever Ryan Radke and Rooney scored from second on a throwing error by the Hofstra catcher on an attempted pickoff at first to give UNCW a 9-0 lead.French drilled a 3-run shot in the sixth, his second of the game, to extend UNCW’s lead to 12-0.Sophomore Bobby Leeper drilled UNCW’s sixth homer of the afternoon with a man on to give the Seahawks a 14-0 advantage in the seventh.The Pride averted the shutout with a run on three hits off Seahawk freshman reliever Justin Bradley in the eighth and added a sacrifice fly by Tom Legregni in the ninth completed the scoring in the ninth making the final 14-2.The series resumes on Saturday with a 2 p.m. start.Notes: The last Seahawk to homer three times in one game was Jonathan Batts against LaSalle in 2006 … UNCW homered at least four times for the third time this season … Six home runs were one short of the school record of seven, also set at Hofstra during the 2003 season … Mark Carver had a career-long 11-game hitting streak halted … Frankoff needed just 78 pitches to complete seven innings … Friday’s game time of 2:05 was the shortest 9-inning game for UNCW since a 1:49 complete game shutout over VCU by Jeff Hatcher last season … Hargrave moved into a tie for fourth all-time, with Mike Foucht (1997-00) at UNCW with 28 career home runs.
