Varsity Girls Basketball from Joe Gaughan:
This year varsity woman’s basketball team returned to the top of the state
ladder and the first game of the season was a capsule of the year to come.
Trailing to the #2 team in the State, Covenant Day School, CFA came back
from 8 points down in the final 4 minutes to pull off the upset and
advance to the High Point Christian Invitational Championship game were we
would beat Gaston Christian School to be the unlikely champions of the Tip
off Tourney.
Raphaela Jochimczyk was named the Tourney MVP. During the
season, CFA would make second half comebacks in 9 of their 22 wins. After
finishing conference (CFIC) play in second place with a 6-2 record, both
loses to conference champion Fayetteville Academy, CFA was rewarded with
the #7 seed in the State tournament. After a first round home win over #10
Gaston Christian it was on to Raleigh for the remainder of the State
playoffs. In the quarterfinal vs. #2 O’Neal, a team CFA lost to by 24
points in December, an early 10 point lead become a 6 point deficit with 4
minutes to play. Key baskets and free throws after getting the lead back
from Anna Barry secured the upset and a slot in the Final Four. In the
semi final CFA would play St. David’s, a team CFA lost to by 1 point
during the regular season. St. David;s was led by Campbell signee and
NCISAA All-State performer Lindsay Bass. St. David’s took a 17- 6 lead
after the first quarter. CFA Defense would hold them to just 13 points the
rest of the game, taking the lead once again with under 2 minutes to play
and winning a trip to the State Championship. CFA would lose that game to
Victory Christian led by Candice Wood, a UNC-Chapel Hill signee. CFA
Varsity Girls Basketball finished 22-6 overall, 6-2 in the CFIC Conference
and #2 in the NCISAA. The Hurricanes were led by First Team All-State
(NCISAA) member Raphaela Jochimczyk who along three Division I signees
made the first team.
Varsity Boys Basketball 07-08 from Loren Baysden:
The Hurricanes of Cape Fear Academy had an up and down year this year, but
finished the season playing their best basketball. The season started off
well, starting 8-4 and winning the Cape Fear Invitational with a win over
Waccamaw Academy to enter the Winter Break. The Canes then got off to a
slow start, in what was soon to be recognized as one of the toughest
conferences in the state at any level. Going 1-7 in the regular season in
conference could have kept this team down, but once the playoffs arrived,
this team, led by Juniors Alex Smith and Tautvydas Kairys, and Seniors
Jake Sigler, Zach Phares, Ben Currin and Matt Jernigan, picked it up
another notch and made a run that ended in the Quarterfinals of the State
Playoffs to the defending State Champion Victory Christian of Charlotte.
The Hurricanes lost 80-76, led by Jake Sigler’s 27 points off of 7 threes.
The Hurricanes hit a total of 15 threes in the game. Victory went on to
win their next two games by an average of 15 points, and won their second
straight State Championship.
The North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association (NCISAA) is
becoming known for it’s superb talent. With 6 of the top 10 rated players
in the state playing at independent schools, and players being recruited
by the top colleges in the nation, the NCISAA is quickly being recognized
as a very tough and competitive level of high school basketball. Cape Fear
Academy faced during the regular season Texas Tech signee and conference
rival Village Christian point guard Tyree Graham and then in the state
tournament - faced George Mason signee Andre Cornelius.
