WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNC Wilmington Director of Athletics Kelly Mehrtens has been named to the Board of Directors for the Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame.

Mehrtens and her fellow board members are busy preparing for the group’s upcoming induction May 4 at the Burney Center on campus.

“The Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame is delighted that Kelly Mehrtens has accepted our invitation to join us in recognizing further outstanding accomplishments in the field of sports,” said George Rountree, III, chairman of the GWSHOF. “Kelly’s experience greatly enhances our ability to satisfy our mission.”

The GWSHOF was established in 2006 and has featured two inductions. The inaugural class included Leon L. Brogden, Roman Gabriel, Wayne Jackson, Sonny Jurgensen and Meadowlark Lemon. The 2007 honorees were Bill Brooks, Jasper “Jap” Davis, Tommy Greene, Jack Holley and Althea Gibson (posthumously).

“I’m very honored with this invitation and look forward to actively participating in the board’s activities,” said Mehrtens.
