Seahawks Get No-Hit and Swept In Saturday Doubleheader

PHILADELPHIA – Sophomore Breanna Gomez hurled a no-hitter in game two to lead Drexel to a doubleheader sweep of UNCW, 9-4 and 2-0, in Colonial Athletic Association softball action Saturday afternoon at Drexel Field. In was the conference opener for both schools.

 

The Dragons improved to 12-7 overall as they extended their winning streak to eight straight. The Seahawks dipped to 9-13-1 on the season as they dropped their third and fourth straight contests. The two teams complete their three-game series Sunday at 11 a.m.

 

Gomez faced just four batters over the limit to even her season mark at 3-3, as she issued three walks in seven innings while striking out two. She did not allow a runner to reach base after the second inning, retiring the final 18 batters she faced in order.

 

Junior Christina Rodriguez provided all the offense for the Dragons in the nightcap, staking Drexel to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third when she hit a two-run home run to center field. Junior Kristen Beaver was 2-for-2 for the Dragons in game two.

 

Freshman Samantha Lisowsky was credited with the loss for UNCW in the nightcap, moving her record to 0-4. She allowed two runs on five hits in seven innings. She struck out four. 

 

Trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth of game one, Drexel exploded for seven runs on five hits and one error to build an 8-4 lead. Sophomore Ashley Botelho opened the scoring with a two-run home run before the Dragons plated two runs on a throwing error by senior Charli Wacker. A double by sophomore Carla Waldron and a two-run home run by junior Lisa Williams closed out the scoring. The Dragons added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as sophomore Katrina Gaudier opened the frame with a solo home run, her second long ball of the contest.

 

Gaudier picked up the win in the circle for the Dragons in the opener to improve to 6-3. In seven innings, Gaudier allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits and three walks. She struck out three. Botelho was 3-for-4 with two RBI to highlight the Drexel attack in game one.

 

Senior Brittney Lehrschall took the loss for UNCW to see her record drop to 3-4. Lehrschall surrendered eight runs (three earned) on eight hits and three walks. Junior Carley Hughes went 2-for-4 to pace the Seahawks lineup in the opener.
