UNCW Sweeps Tribe, Streak At 16 - How High Will Seahawks Be Ranked In Top 25 Poll?

Seniors Nate Hall and Shane French combined for five hits and five runs batted in as UNC Wilmington completed a sweep of Colonial Athletic Association foe William & Mary on Sunday with an 8-3 win at Brooks Field.

 

The Seahawks ran their nation-leading win streak to 16 games and improved to 17-4 overall and remained prefect in the CAA at 9-0. The Tribe dropped to 16-8 and 7-5 with their fourth straight loss.

 

Hall finished the game a triple shy of hitting for the cycle, while French doubled, singled and drove in three runs. Sophomore Mike Rooney and senior Daniel Hargrave each added two hits for the Seahawks, who out hit the CAA’s top hitting team, 12-7, on the afternoon.

 

UNCW senior Jeff Hatcher (3-0) won his third consecutive start, allowing three runs on five hits and a walk in five innings. Freshmen relievers Cameron Roth and Stephen Harrold held the Tribe to just two hits over the final four innings.

 

Freshman Tim Norton (3-1) dropped his first decision of the season after being reached for seven runs in 4 1/3 innings.

 

Junior Ben Guez gave the Tribe a 2-0 lead in the top of the first with his third home run of the season, a 2-run shot to center off Hatcher. Senior Paul Juliano, who scored on the homer, had singled to lead off the game.

 

Hall cut the UNCW deficit in half, 2-1, with a solo homer leading off the second inning.

 

Junior Mike Sheridan restored the Tribe’s two-run lead with a leadoff homer down the right field line ion the fourth.

 

A walk to Mark Carver to open the fourth for the Seahawks and back-to-back doubles by Hall and French tied the game. Freshman Cody Stanley gave UNCW its first lead with a fielder’s choice to score French from third.

 

The Seahawks built a 7-3 lead in the fifth with three runs on three hits, a walk and two hit batters. A walk to French with the bases loaded by Norton plated the first run and knocked Norton out of the game. Senior reliever Sean Grieve struggled with his command, hitting Barefoot and Rooney later in the inning to force in runs.

 

Hall drove in his second run of the game with a single in the sixth to extend UNCW’s lead to 8-3.

The Seahawks open a 4-game road swing on Wednesday with a 6 p.m. start against Coastal Carolina in Conway, S.C.

 

Notes: UNCW’s 17-4 mark ties the 1985 club for best start in the first 21 games of the season … The ’85 team opened with a 21-4 mark … Jason Appel extended his hitting streak to nine games with an infield single fifth inning … Cameron Roth has not allowed an earned run in his first 17 innings as a Seahawk … UNCW completed a 4-0 week against two teams in the RPI top 40 … UNCW outscored the Tribe, 33-10, in the three game series … The Tribe entered the series averaging 9.3 runs per game … The Seahawk pitching staff fashioned a 2.67 ERA for the weekend and held their opponent to a .248 batting average.
