WILMINGTON, N.C. – Freshman Chelsea Kahle trimmed Maria Camberos, 7-5, 6-4, to lift UNC Wilmington over Coastal Carolina, 4-1, in a non-conference women’s tennis match Wednesday at the varsity courts.
The Lady Seahawks, 17-8-1, won their third straight outing and improved to 9-2 at home with the decisive win over the Chanticleers. CCU fell to 11-9 on the season.
UNCW won the doubles point behind wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. The No. 2 tandem of Priscilla Roberts and Hartley Collins crushed Kimberly Webb and Sofie Ahlberg, 8-1, to get things going and Lauren Isenhour and Kayla Schwenk clinched the point with a hard-fought 8-6 decision over Amy Pazahanick and Tina Petkova at No. 1
Coach Jenny Garrity’s team secured up the match with victories by Kahle, Schwenk and Lindsay Leblang in singles.
Schwenk raced past Petkova, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 2 singles and Leblang was declared the winner at No. 4 singles when Ahlberg was forced to quit with an injury. Kahle then nailed down the win by ousting Camberos on court No. 2.
The Seahawks conclude their regular season slate Sunday with an 11 a.m. match against Colonial Athletic Association foe Old Dominion.
“At this point in the year, this is a big win,” said Garrity. “We are banged up right now and were so tough today. It was truly a team effort as everyone down the line left everything they had on the court.
“We talked before the match about our level of effort and execution, and we did both very well. We look forward to our match with ODU this weekend and seeing our alumni back on campus.”
