WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNC Wilmington head men’s golf coach Jason Widener and his Seahawks open play at the 2008 Colonial Athletic Association Championships on Friday when they tee-off along side William & Mary and Hofstra at 12:11 p.m.
The Seahawks have a decidedly different look this season as three freshmen find themselves in the starting lineup and just one player, sophomore Derek Wallace, who participated in last year’s championship when the Seahawks finished in fourth-place.
After missing last year’s final, junior Will Shambley returns to the Seahawk lineup this season looking to help lift the Seahawks to a championship title. Shambley co-led the Seahawks this season with a 74.7 stroke average.
Shambley, a former CAA Rookie-of-the-Year, has had tremendous success at the Championships, twice finishing eighth for the Seahawks.
Joining Shambley at the top of the lineup is freshman Josh Brock, who also has fashioned a 74.7 stroke average as a rookie. Although in just his first season with the Seahawks, Brock has recorded three top-20 finishes including a tie for second at the Cuthbert Cup in the spring opener. His low-round for the season was a staggering 66 in the final round of the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate.
Wallace, who finished in a tie for 14th last spring, is looking to get back on track after a tough sophomore more season. He closed out the fall season with a 21st-place finish at the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate, but waqsn’t able to find his groove in the spring.
Rounding out the UNCW contingent will be freshmen Michael Taylor and Ryan Sullivan, both of whom gave Coach Widener solid play during the spring.
Taylor opened the spring season with a sixth-place finish at the Cuthbert Cup and recorded his career-low at the tournament with a second round total of 69.
Sullivan, meanwhile, appeared in five spring tournaments and fashioned a season-best finish of 22nd at the Cuthbert Cup.
