Seahawk Baseball Team Dumps Delaware As Mark Carver And Jason Appel Lead Offensive Attack

cfsrpics_0024-c-gslam-swingweb.pngWILMINGTON, N.C. - Senior Mark Caver, right, drove in four runs and senior Jason Appel had three hits as No. 29 UNC Wilmington evened its Colonial Athletic Association baseball series at Delaware with a 13-5 win on Saturday at Hannah Stadium.The Seahawks improved to 17-2-1 in the league and 28-8-1 overall while the Blue Hens fell to 13-23 and 6-11.UNCW banged out 16 hits for the second straight game and has reached double figures in hits in each of its last seven outings, raising its team batting average from .308 to .319 in that span. Senior Daniel Hargrave was one of five other Seahawks to have at least two hits, including his career-high 13th homer of the season.UNCW Junior Brad Holt (6-1) picked up the win in a duel against another highly-touted righthander in Delaware junior Mike McGuire (4-4). Holt fanned six in 6 1/3 innings and walked just one. McGuire, meanwhile, was roughed up for 10 runs on 10 hits and five walks in 4 1/3 innings.Senior Justin Barefoot, who would later homer for the third time in five games, doubled to left to plate senior Nate Hall, who singled with one out, and give UNCW a 1-0 lead in the second inning.UNCW added to its lead with a 2-run single off the bat of Carver. A walk to Hargrave and a single through the right side by Appel started the inning with one out. A balk moved both runners up for Carver, whose check swing single landed in short right field for a 3-0 advantage.Barefoot struck again leading off the fourth, hitting the first pitch he saw over the right center field wall for a 4-0 lead. Later in the inning, UD intentionally walked Appel to load the bases with two out, but McGuire hit Carver to force in the second run and Hall drew a walk to cap the scoring and give UNCW a 6-0 lead.UNCW batted around for the second consecutive inning, hanging a 5-spot on the scoreboard for an 11-0 lead in the top of the fifth. Back-to-back homers by Hargrave, a 3-run homer, and Appel highlighted the inning.Junior Ryan Reed’s lead-off homer in the fifth pulled the Blue Hens to within 11-1.Freshman Pat Dameron doubled in three runs in the bottom of the seventh as the Blue Hens moved to within 12-4. Junior Kyle Davis plated the fourth run with a double inside the third base bag to make it 12-5 and knock Holt out of the game. Relievers Larry Salefsky, a senior, and sophomore Kyle Lewis combined to close out the inning.A pair of errors led to an unearned run for the Seahawks in the ninth as UNCW extended its lead to 13-5.Lewis retired seven of the eight batters he faced to close out the win.The series concludes on Sunday with a 1 p.m. start.Notes: UNCW has 50 hits in its last three games … Daniel Hargrave belted his career-high 13th homer of the season, breaking his previous high of 12 set as a sophomore … Bobby Leeper extended his hitting streak to a career-long 10 games … Every starter had at least one hit for the Seahawks … Kyle Lewis has allowed just one run, unearned, in 7 1/3 innings this week, all in relief … UNCW is 25-1-1 when leading after six innings.     -Courtesy UNCW Sports Information  :  Photo - Eric Bartsch
