WILMINGTON, N.C. - Junior Bradley Holt struck out nine batters and freshman Cody Stanley doubled twice and scored three runs as No. 27 UNC Wilmington stormed past New York Tech, 12-1, in college baseball action Saturday at Brooks Field.
UNCW, who claimed the series with the win, improved to 32-9-1, while the Bears slipped to 12-22-1 with their third consecutive loss.
Holt, who ran his record to 7-1 on the season, allowed one run on five hits and three walks in picking up the win. The hard throwing righthander struck out the side in both the second and third innings.
Sophomore Frank Ryan (2-4) was roughed up for seven runs on seven hits and five walks in 6 1/3 innings.
Stanley, who also drove in two runs, scored three runs for the second straight game to lead the Seahawk lineup. Senior Jason Appel, meanwhile, also had three hits and raised his batting average to .409.
Freshman Effrey Valdez led Tech with two hits. The Bears had three hits in the first inning against Holt, but managed just three hits over the final eight innings.
The Bears took an early lead, 1-0, on those three hits and plated a run on Valdez’s single to right center.
Sophomore Bobby Leeper tripled into the right field corner to plate two and give the Seahawks a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second.
The Seahawks built a 5-1 lead with three runs in the bottom of the third. Freshman Alex Hill, who drew three walks, opened the inning with a base on balls and Hargrave and Appel followed with back-to-back doubles to score two. The final run came across on senior Nate Hall’s sacrifice fly to right.
Holt struggled in the fourth, walking the first batter and eventually loading the bases with a two-out walk and a hit by pitch. Holt worked out of the jam though by recording his seventh strikeout of the afternoon.
UNCW added an unearned run in the sixth to extend its lead to 6-1. Stanley doubled to open the inning and moved to third on a fielding error. Ryan fanned senior Justin Barefoot and Leeper managed to get picked off for the second out. Sophomore Mike Rooney drove in the run with a 2-out single to center.
Stanley struck again in the seventh with a two-run single that made it 8-1. NYT junior reliever Matt Doran struggled with his command walking two and hitting three as the Seahawks pushed it to 10-1 following a RBI hit-by-pitch by Rooney and a walk to Hill.
In the eighth, senior Mark Carver doubled in a run and extended his hitting streak to 11 games, matching his career-long.
