UNCW Seahawk Softball Team Swept On Saturday

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Senior Ashley Cowan and junior Madi Gore both hurled complete-game shutouts as Georgia State swept UNC Wilmington, 5-0 and 4-0, in a Colonial Athletic Association softball doubleheader Saturday at Boseman Field.

The Panthers improved to 33-16 on the season and 11-5 in CAA play while the Seahawks dropped to 12-29-1 overall and 3-14 in league action. The two teams close out their weekend series Sunday with a single game at 11 a.m.

 

Game one saw the Panthers break a scoreless deadlock in the top of the fourth, using two hits and two Seahawk errors to take a 3-0 lead. Georgia State got its first run on a throwing error by senior Lindsay Styons that scored freshman Lauren Jones before junior Natasha Berry singled up the middle to plate the final two runs of the frame.

 

Sophomore Rachel Cunningham increased the Panthers lead to 5-0 in the top of the fifth, hitting a two-run home run to left field for her fourth long ball of the season. Cunningham’s blast scored senior Ashley Gowan, who reached base earlier in the inning on a walk.

 

Gore (12-7) picked up the win in the opener, allowing just seven base runners to reach base on seven hits. She struck out seven hitters and did not issue a walk. Senior Brittney Lehrschall (4-11) took the loss for the Seahawks in game one, allowing five runs (two earned) on eight hits and three walks. Lehrschall struck out six.

 

In the nightcap, Georgia State scored all of its runs in the top of the fifth, plating four runs on three hits to take a 4-0 lead. The Panthers got their first run of the frame on a throwing error by senior Charli Wacker before a bunt single by Berry brought in the second run. Freshman Catherine Lee closed out the scoring with a two-run double to left-center.

 

Senior Ashley Cowan (8-5) picked up the win for Georgia State, allowing 11 runners to reach base on eight hits and three walks. Freshman Samantha Lisowsky (2-7) took the loss for UNCW, surrendering four runs (three earned) on five hits and one walk.  - Courtesy UNCW Sports Information
