The Wilmington Hammerheads (1-5-3) hosted Crystal Palace Baltimore on Tuesday at Legion Stadium. After falling behind early, the Hammers battled back to tie 2-2 and earn a point in the USL-2 Standings.
Things weren’t looking good for the Hammerheads in just the second minute as Pat Healy scored on a rocket giving Baltimore the 1-0 lead. Despite outshooting Crystal Palace 10-3 in the first half, Val Teixeira’s goal in the 25th minute put the Hammers in a 2-0 halftime hole.
But there was no quit in the Hammerheads. Jamie Holmes scored on an assist from Jerrit Thayer in the 67th minute, and Wilmington had life. Holmes came into the game with just 31 minutes played this season; his first points of the season couldn’t have come at a better time as the Hammers needed a score to get back in the game.
In the 80th minute, Crystal Palace, which was feeling the heat from the Hammerheads, committed a foul in the penalty box. Trey Alexander buried the PK, and evened the score at two.
Hammerheads head coach David Irving said he felt like the team should have come away with a win, and in looking at the stats, you can see why; they outshot Baltimore 17-5 on the night.
Wilmington has earned at least one point in their last three games (1-0-2), but will have to step their game up as they hit the road for their next three contests. This weekend, Wilmington will play at Cleveland on Friday and then at Pittsburgh Saturday. The Hammerheads return home on July 3 when they host Bermuda at Legion Stadium.
