The Wilmington Hammerheads tied the Pittsburgh Riverhounds 1-1 Saturday night as they wrapped up their weekend road trip.
Travis MacKenzie gave Pittsburgh a 1-0 lead on an assist from Jean Jerome in the 27th minute. The Riverhounds, which outshot Wilmington 9-5 in the first half and 16-9 for the game, held the lead into halftime.
Ten minutes into the second half, Wilmington’s Christopher Murray was issued his second yellow card. But the Hammerheads would rally, even being a man down, and three minutes after the ejection, Jonathan Burklo scored in the 58th minute evening the score at one.
The Hammerheads have not lost a game in their last five contests, but clearly could have used a victory and three points against the winless Riverhounds. With just nine games left, the Hammerheads need wins, not ties, if they were going to make a push in the USL-2 standings. After Saturday’s match at Pittsburgh, the Hammerheads sit at 1-5-5, while the Riverhounds hold a 0-7-4 mark.
The Hammerheads will round out their three game road swing on Saturday, June 28 when they visit the Harrisburgh City Islanders at the Skyline Sports Complex. Harrisburgh has lost just one game all season (4-1-5) and are currently in fourth place. The City Islanders defense and goal keeping has been excellent in ‘08; they have allowed just six goals in their ten games.
The Hammerheads will return home on July 3 when they host Bermuda.
