TAMPA, FL - United Soccer Leagues announced the USL First Division and USL Second Division Team of the Week honors Tuesday for Week 13 of the season, honoring Seattle’s Chris Eylander and Charlotte’s Jorge Herrera as the Players of the Week, respectively.
The Sounders hit the road having struggled of late in league play and nearly came away with two shutouts. A narrow 1-0 loss in Rochester Friday on a rare defensive let-down was followed by a surprising 1-0 win in Montreal Sunday.
The Rhinos almost enjoyed a two goal advantage just ten minutes into the game Friday, but Seattle goalkeeper Chris Eylander made a huge leaping save on a Menyongar header to keep his team close. Unfortunately the Sounders would never find the equalizer.
Two nights later, Eylander made three fantastic saves among 10 on the afternoon to post a shutout in a game dominated by the Impact, who outshot the Sounders 15-4. After accepting a short pass from forward Roberto Brown, midfielder David Testo took a low 20-meter shot that Sounders goalkeeper Chris Eylander stopped, diving to his left, in the 13th minute.
Three minutes later midfielder Tony Donatelli deflected with a header a corner kick to the near post from midfielder Rocco Placentino, but Eylander dove again to his left to make the save. Positioned at the penalty spot in the 39th minute, Brown deflected with a header a center from Rocco Placentino coming from the left, but Eylander jumped to redirect the ball over the net.
While Saunders had posted four consecutive shutouts in Open Cup play, the clean sheet in Montreal was only his sixth of the season.
Last week, Jorge Herrera was the set-up man. This week, he switched roles and was the finisher as he guided the Eagles to a wild 4-3 victory on the road against the Wilmington Hammerheads.
Charlotte fell behind early but responded in the 39th minute, capitalizing on a corner kick. Jorge Herrera took the corner kick from the right side and played it short to Joseph Kabwe up the endline. Kabwe laid the ball off to his right for Herrera. Jorge Herrera scored with a left-footed shot that found the back of the net.
Herrera scored his second goal of the match in the 43rd minute to give Charlotte a 3-1 lead. Charlotte played the ball forward from the midfield to Dustin Swinehart. Swinehart dropped the ball off for Herrera, who blasted a left-footed shot from 12 yards out that bent around to the right side of the goal to beat Wilmington goalkeeper John O’Hara.
