Three of last season’s UNCW baseball stars have begun their pro careers in the NY-Penn League. Bradley Holt, drafted 33rd overall by the NY Mets, came up with his most impressive performance on the hill Sunday as the Brooklyn Cyclones’ starting pitcher shut down the State College Spikes’ offense.
The right-hander struck out 10 in seven innings, allowing only four hits as the Cyclones posted the 2-0 win. Holt improved his record to 2-2 to accompany his 1.91 ERA, which is the lowest on the staff for pitchers who have tossed at least 25 innings.
Fellow former Seahawk Daniel Hargrave isn’t having such a smooth transition to pro ball. Through 21 games, Hargrave is hitting just .107; he has eight hits and has grounded into five double plays. Not a good ratio … but it is early still.
Jason Appel has had a much better start at the dish as the former UNCW outfielder is hitting .368, tops on the Hudson Valley Renegades. Appel has only played 12 games and would be leading the league if he had enough at-bats to qualify.

Keep up with the Kids from UNCW. Also, in the past you have done a couple of stories about Ice Hockey here in Wilmington. Our travel teams will be playing regularly throughout the Carolinas and Virginia with tournaments from Atlanta to New York. Also, UNCW does have a club Ice Hockey team. Fun to Watch! The Coastal Carolina Clippers is the new name of the travel teams. Thanks.
