Orioles’ Luke Scott and Nationals’ Willie Harris Named AL and NL Players of the Week

Baltimore Orioles outfielder Luke Scott has been named the Bank of America Presents the American League Player of the Week for the period ending July 20th.

In four games following the All-Star break, the left-handed hitting Scott hit .538 (7-13) with four runs scored, two doubles, three home runs and six RBI. The 30-year-old outfielder posted a 1.385 slugging percentage along with a .571 on-base percentage during Baltimore’s four-game series against the Detroit Tigers. On July 18th, Scott hit two home runs to lead the O’s to a 7-4 win. On Saturday, the Oklahoma State University product hit a 10th inning walk-off homer, capping his 3-for-5 day in Baltimore’s 11-10 seesaw victory. The Florida native is batting .267 with 17 home runs and 40 RBI on the season. This marks Luke’s first career weekly award.

Other nominees were Scott’s teammate, third baseman Melvin Mora (.400, 1.067 SLG, 1 2B, 3 HR, 7 RBI); outfielder Raul Ibañez (.455, 1.000 SLG, 2 HR, 5 RBI) of the Seattle Mariners; second baseman Robinson Cano (.571, .929 SLG, 2 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI) of the New York Yankees; outfielder Delmon Young (.667, .917 SLG, 1 HR, 3 RBI) of the Minnesota Twins; and the American League’s starting pitcher in the 2008 All-Star Game, left-hander Cliff Lee (1-0, 2.00 ERA, 9.0 IP, 1 CG) of the Cleveland Indians.

Willie Harris of the Washington Nationals has been named Bank of America Presents the National League Player of the Week for the period ending July 20th. 

Harris hit .583 (7-for-12) during the week and led the N.L. with seven RBI. The 30-year-old left fielder recorded a double, triple, home run, stolen base and five runs scored, while posting a .688 on-base percentage and a 1.083 slugging percentage. Harris collected multi-hit games in each of his three games played, including a home run and five RBI in the Nationals’ 15-6 win at Atlanta on July 20th. The Cairo, Georgia native is the only active MLB player to attend Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Georgia. This marks Willie’s first career weekly award honor.

Other nominees this past week included Troy Glaus (.438, 3 HR, 5 RBI), Rick Ankiel (.412, 2 HR, 6 RBI) and Albert Pujols (.583, .600 OBP, 5 RBI) of the Cardinals; Atlanta’s Mark Teixeira (.556, 2 HR, 3 RBI); Florida’s Jorge Cantu (.538, 1 2B, 4 RBI) and Jeremy Hermida (.364, 2 HR, 2 RBI); Carlos Delgado (.615, 1 HR, 5 RBI) and David Wright (.385, 2 HR, 6 RBI) of the Mets; Milwaukee’s Ryan Braun (.462, 2 3B, 5 RBI) and CC Sabathia (1-0, 1.00 ERA, 10 SO); Colorado’s Jeff Baker (.438, 1 HR, 3 RBI); Ryan Theriot (.583, 2 2B, 2 RBI) and Ryan Dempster (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 7 SO) of the Cubs; Philadelphia’s Pat Burrell (.417, 2 HR, 2 RBI); Houston’s Miguel Tejada (.500, 1 RBI); San Diego’s Edgar Gonzalez (.444, 2 HR, 5 RBI); Nomar Garciaparra (.462, 2 HR, 3 RBI) of the Dodgers; Cincinnati’s Edwin Encarnacion (.385, 2 HR, 3 RBI); and Arizona’s Dan Haren (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 7 SO).
