Sunday, Not A Fun Day, For Sharks

July 28th, 2008 · No Comments

After a long early Sunday bus ride to Columbia, the Sharks endured a long night of baseball dropping both ends of a double header 5-2 then 13-4.

The first order of business for the Sharks was to finish a game they started back on the fourth of July. The game was suspended do to rain and lightening with the score tied at one in the bottom of the fourth. The Blowfish and Sharks would pick things up right there.

Ryan Vander Tuig(San Jose State) came on to continue the game Matt Freeman(Nebraska) had started 23 days earlier. Vander Tuig gave up a run in each of the first three innings he worked, plus a run in the bottom of the ninth, to take the loss 5-2.

A lone run in their first at bat was the only offense in the resumed game for the Sharks.John Nester(Clemson) led things off with a single. After he was sacrificed to second, Matt Kirchner(Elon) doubled down the right field line to bring him home. Bryant Gaines(North Carolina) started a possible Sharks rally in the ninth with a two out single to center. Back to back walks would load the bases but a ground ball to short would end the threat and the ballgame.

Some of that late offensive spark carried over into the second ballgame as the Sharks jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead. After a walk and fielders choice, Hunter Owen(Milsaps)powered a home run to deep left. The lead would not hold as starter Mike Rudman(Miami)would struggle through two and a third innings giving up eight earned runs.

The Sharks would get two back in the fifth but could get no closer. With two down and the bases loaded Kirchner came up with another big hit with a two rbi double to right center. Runs would come home off of two Shark relievers to put the game out of reach for the 13-4 final in seven innings.

The Sharks will head home for a Monday night contest with the Folorence Redwolves. Its Ladies Night out at “the Tank.” Ladies get in for half price all night. Its also kids eat free Monday, so bring the whole family out for some exciting Sharks baseball.  -Courtesy Wilmington Sharks
