Both Hoggard and New Hanover were awarded with first round home games in the NCHSAA Football Playoffs on Friday night.
Hoggard, 9-1, was moved up to the 4-AA classification with all of the big boys, but that won’t phase the Vikings as they beat the 4-AA eventual State Champs last year on their way to the 4A title.
In the first round, Hoggard, the #2 seed in the East, will host #15 Pinecrest. The Patriots, out of the Mid-Southeastern League, enter the game with a 7-4 record. After winning seven of their first eight ball games, Pinecrest enters the playoffs on a three game losing streak in which they have been outscored 102-14. That being said, they have played a very challenging schedule, as two of the three loses to close the season came to Fayetteville 71st and Jack Britt, both of which won nine games in the regular season.
Hoggard should be able to advance in round one if they can prevent turning the ball over, as they did in their regular season finale against New Hanover.
New Hanover claimed the #2 spot in the Mideastern Conference and were rewarded with the #5 seed in the 4-A East Region. The Wildcats, 6-5, will host Northern Durham, 5-6, at Legion Stadium in round one.
At 2-5, Northern Durham looked like a team that wouldn’t qualify for the playoffs, but finished the season by winning three of their last four.
The Wildcats and Knights share a common opponent, as both teams played Southern Durham this season, each suffering a loss.
