WILMINGTON, N.C. – Senior Erin Skipper recorded a game-high 18 kills and sophomore Ginny Bray added 15 to lead William & Mary to a 3-1 (25-21, 25-16, 14-25, 25-9) victory over UNC Wilmington in Colonial Athletic Association volleyball action Saturday at Hanover Hall. The Tribe Improved to 19-6 overall and moved into sole possession of second place in the CAA with a 9-3 league ledger. The Seahawks, meanwhile, fell to 6-21 overall and 0-12 in CAA action.
Bray and Skipper were joined in double figure kills by junior Katie McCarney, who chipped in 10. Skipper posted six total blocks and Bray added five, including one solo block, to lead the Tribe’s effort at the net. Senior Jill Nowadly had a game-high 16 digs while senior Jo Sotto chipped in 13 and senior Kim Mount added 11. Mount also dished out 49 assists for the double-double.
Junior Lindsey Strucko recorded eight kills to lead UNCW while senior Megan Nash and junior Paula McConnell added six kills each. McConnell posted six total blocks and sophomore Kimberly Friedl added five total blocks, including one solo block, as UNCW held a 10-8 advantage in that category. Junior Ashlyn Morris recorded 13 digs and junior Anna Price chipped in 10. Senior Jacqueline Crane dished out 18 assists while freshman Kelsey Bendig recorded 10.
Skipper and Bray recorded five kills apiece in game one to lead the Tribe to a 25-21 victory in the opening game. Bray continued her torrid pace in game two, posting six kills on eight attempts to pace a Tribe attack that hit .344 on its way to a 25-16 victory. UNCW extended the match with a 25-14 victory in game three, combining for a .312 hitting percentage while limiting the Tribe to a .000 attack clip. Friedl and McConnell combined to post seven total blocks during the game as UNCW recorded six blocks in the game. The Tribe put the match away in game four, opening on a 10-2 run on its way to a 25-9 victory. Skipper recorded a team-high six kills in the decisive game as the Tribe hit .444 in the set while limiting the Seahawks to a (.179) hitting percentage.
Both teams return to action Friday at 7 p.m. in CAA action. UNCW is at George Mason while W&M is at league-leading Northeastern.
