The NCHSAA Football Playoffs get underway tonight, and both New Hanover and Hoggard will host first round games.
Hoggard, 9-1, was moved up to the 4-AA classification with all of the big boys, but that won’t phase the Vikings as they beat the 4-AA eventual State Champs last year on their way to the 4A title.
New Hanover claimed the #2 spot in the Mideastern Conference and were rewarded with the #5 seed in the 4-A East Region. The Wildcats, 6-5, will host Northern Durham, 5-6, at Legion Stadium in round one. Both games kickoff at 7:30.

In local soccer action, UNC Wilmington (10-9 overall, 7-4 in CAA) will be the top seed and host for the semifinals and finals of the conference tournament. The Seahawks, which captured their first ever regular season Colonial title, will face #5 Northeastern at 5 p.m. with the second CAA semi to follow.
On top of all this, Friday night is also the season opener for the UNCW Men’s Basketball team, as they welcome Appalachian State to Trask Coliseum. The Seahawks were picked to finish 11th in the twelve team CAA. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
