Former New Hanover basketball star Ty Walker scored five points and grabbed two rebounds in his collegiate debut for Wake Forest in their 94-48 season opening win over NC Central.
Walker played five minutes; it could be difficult for him to get much run with fellow freshman frontliners Al-Farouq Aminu and Tony Woods performing so well… they combined to shoot 15-19 from the floor. Along with center Chas MacFarlane who went 4-4 from the floor, and forward James Johnson who tallied 18 points and 10 rebounds, depth up front will be a strength of the ‘08-’09 Deamon Deacons.
Wake Forest is back on the court Wednesday when they host UNCW. This will be a difficult test for the Seahawks who will be undersized, to say the least.
The Laney girls’ basketball team will be without Shatara Jackson this year, and she played in her first collegiate action over the weekend. Jackson, the Cape Fear Sports Report’s Girls’ High School Basketball MVP a year ago, scored four points on 2-5 shooting in Winston Salem State Uninversity’s season opener. In her second game, Jackson faced UNCW and with eight points was the team’s second high scorer as the Rams fell to the Seahawks 65-50.
Neither Wake nor WSSU played UNCW last year, but both Walker and Jackson will have faced the University they grew up near, in their second collegiate game.
