College Football: Texas On The Outside Looking In; Florida And Alabama Make It Official

The newest BCS standings were released Sunday afternoon and despite pounding rival Texas A&M this weekend, Texas was passed by Oklahoma after the Sooners’ win at Oklahoma State.

By finishing ahead of Texas and Texas Tech, which also finished with a 6-1 league mark, in the BCS standings, Oklahoma won the Big 12 South’s bid to the league championship game.

I can’t believe that we are subject to this whole idiotic system, not to mention… why are there two divisions in the Big 12 anyway?

Why is Missouri in the Big 12 Championship game when they were maybe the fifth best team in the conference?

Unbelievably, an espn.com web page says the following in its explanation of the BCS… “Until the early 1990s the selection process for major bowl matchups with affiliated conference champions was totally disorganized and in many cases resulted in a chaotic situation.”

Chaotic situation?  Hello.  How much more chaotic can it be?

Why are we having to put up with this crap?  I don’t believe politics really should be involved in sports, but I hope Barack steps in here and ends this madness.  Not having a playoff is really un-American.

And these split conferences have to go.  Like the Big 12, the same thing could have happened in the SEC if Florida and Alabama had been in the same division.

If Alabama was in the East instead of the West, they would be playing Mississippi for the SEC title… and that’s going to bring in more money than Bama vs. Gators?  Why not have the best two teams from the conference play for the conference championship?

Oh, my bad… that would make the most sense, but maybe not the most cents according to NCAA financial gurus… which after all is what this is all about.

But how can you not market a 16 team playoff to be one of the biggest and best sports spectacles in America?  The financial possibilities are endless.

The argument against changing the current system is that the regular season means so much.

Yeah, as if people wouldn’t watch or go to games if there were playoffs.  There would still be conference championships on the line… not to mention pride, which in college football still counts for a lot.  So you’ve got the best regular season… but the post-season stinks!  There may be a few entertaining bowl games, but there is no real intrigue because there is no next week… no soap opera like stories to follow.

Essentially, all of the bowl games, except one, are meaningless.  On the other hand, with a 16 team playoff, there would be 14 games that all lead up to something else followed by a TRUE national championship game… not one that was decided by some writers splitting hairs.

Anyway, I’m not wasting anymore of my time ranting and raving… didn’t even mean to get involved in this post anyway, excuse the poor grammar, just had to vent… it is so frustrating.  ARGHHHHH!!!!!

I feel a bit better now… feel free to let it rip in the comment box, get it off your chest…
