Wilmington High School Sports : New Hanover Wildcats Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball Claim Wins Over Ashley

December 13th, 2008 · No Comments

First year NHHS head coach Kirk Angel’s Wildcats remained undefeated Friday as the Wildcats swept the boys’ and girls’ games against Ashley.

In the girls’ game, Tysheia Robinson poured home a game high 22 points, but New Hanover needed overtime before claiming a 49-46 victory.

Kiarra Brewster, 12, and Morgan King, 11, also scored in double figures for the Lady Cats.

Ashley was led by Katia Holiday’s 15 points.  Abi Kellum and Ashley Altman each scored 11 for the Eagles.

In the nightcap, New Hanover opened up a comfortable 28-23 halftime lead on the strength of 13 points by Jackiel Moore.

But Micah Allen, who scored nine in the first half himself, and Ashley wouldn’t go away.

The Eagles opened the third quarter with a 9-2 run and cut the lead to 30-28.

But just like that, New Hanover got their running game going and responded with a devastating 16-4 spurt as they stretched the margin to 46-32.

Ashley whittled the lead down a bit, but never got closer than the eight point final margin of 67-59.

Moore finished with 22 points to lead New Hanover as the Cats remained undefeated.

Micah Allen tallied a team high 19 points for the Eagles who had four players in double figures; Travis Keys (14), Reid Clark (12), and CJ Caldwell (10) were the others.

New Hanover is right back on the court Saturday afternoon at Brogden for their annual endowment game while Ashley next plays Tuesday when they visit Topsail.

Other Boys’ Basketball Games

Alex Smith’s 25 points weren’t enough for Cape Fear Academy at home Friday as they were handed their third consecutive set back, dropping a 77-66 decision to Topsail.  The Hurricanes had won three in a row before their recent slide, and now sit at 5-5 on the season.  CFA is back in action Monday when they play at South Brunswick.

The road was unkind to Laney Friday night.  The Bucs were on the short end of a 65-58 final score at Jacksonville.  Laney will bring a 3-3 record into Monday’s game at Eastern Wayne.
