WILMINGTON, N.C. – Freshman forward Quinn McDowell keyed a decisive 12-2 run midway through the second half to lift William & Mary past host UNC Wilmington 73-59, in a battle of the Colonial Athletic Association’s two winless men’s basketball teams Wednesday night at Trask Coliseum.
The Tribe (6-8, 1-3) shot a torrid 72.7 percent in the final period to pull away from the Seahawks (3-13, 0-4), who dropped their 10th consecutive game by shooting just 38.2 percent overall and 33.3 percent in the crucial second half. The Seahawks, who played without second-leading scorer Johnny Wolf who missed the contest with a sprained ankle, hoisted 31 3-point attempts, surpassing the 30-mark for the sixth time this season and dropping to 2-4 in those contests.
David Schneider poured in 17 points while McDowell chipped in 12 coming off the bench for the Tribe who finished the evening shooting 57.4 percent from the field. All 10 players scored for the Tribe, who also knocked down 14-of-16 free throw attempts on the night.
Despite landing three scorers in double digits led by sophomore Chad Tomko’s 17 points, the Seahawks were unable to halt their dubious streak. Freshman Kevon Moore had 14 points while junior Montez Downey added 11 all in the first half.
UNCW took a 30-26 edge into the second half, but W&M got out of the gate fast from the lockerrooms, scoring 10 of the first 12 points in the final period to jump ahead, 38-32. Schneider scored five of the points, including a conventional 3-point play, and the Tribe gained control.
Tomko heated up, knocking down three consecutive treys, to give the Seahawks a brief lead, 41-40, with 15:05 left. However, McDowell started the big 12-2 run with a bucket in the paint at 14:45, added another jumper on the left elbow and Steven Hess’ dunk gave W&M a 52-43 margin with 9:15 showing.
W&M’s largest lead came with 4:23 to left McDowell scored an uncontested layup to push the lead to 60-47 at 4:23.
Downey came off the bench to fire up the Seahawks in the first half, going 4-for-5 from the field and making all three of his 3-point attempts for 11 points to give UNCW a 30-26 edge at intermission.
After Schneider staked W&M to an early 4-3 lead on the jumper along the right baseline, the Seahawks took the lead and held it throughout the first half. Downey connected on back-to-back triples to put the Seahawks ahead, 13-9, at 13:35 and UNCW pushed the margin to 25-20 when reserve guard Josh Sheets banked in a trifecta from the top of the key at 6:51.
W&M chopped the lead to 27-26 when Peter Stein made a basket in the paint with 4:30 showing before Chad Tomko’s 3-pointer from the left wing left the Seahawks with only their second lead of the season at the break.
Both teams continue CAA play on Saturday. The Seahawks complete a two-game homestand with a 7 p.m. tip against Delaware, while the Tribe returns to Williamsburg to entertain James Madison at 7 p.m.
