Critical Week For Wilmington High School Basketball Teams

January 26th, 2009 · No Comments

Laney is the place to be this week as the Bucs will host the top two boys’ basketball teams in the Mideastern Conference.

On Tuesday, the Bucs welcome Jacksonville to Michael Jordan Gymnasium.  Laney will look to extend their three game conference winning streak, but the Cardinals sit a top the Mideastern Conference standings and have yet to lose a league game.   Also on Tuesday, New Hanover will visit Ashley.  New Hanover beat the Screamin Eagles 67-59 earlier in the season on the strength of 22 points from Jackiel Moore.

There is also a big game Thursday night as Jacksonville makes their second trip of the week to Wilmington as they square off against Hoggard.  A win for the Vikings would put them right back in the mix in the conference standings.

There will be some other action on Thursday; New Hanover and West Brunswick will be making up their game that was snowed out last Tuesday.

Laney will cap their big week on Friday when they are visited by in-town rival New Hanover.   The Wildcats have gotten the better of Laney in their two previous match-ups this season, but both of those were at Brogden Hall.

Hoggard will be at home for the second time in as many nights Friday when White Oak comes to James Hebbe Gym.  The clash of the Vikings will feature two teams who could climb to the top of the standings or fall back into the middle of the pack.  Hoggard won their first game 46-30 when the teams met in Jacksonville.

Ashley will be on the road Friday as they visit West Brunswick and try to sweep the season series.  The Eagles won at home, 71-54, back on January 6.

New Hanover was supposed to step out of conference to welcome Chapel Hill to Brogden Hall on Saturday.  However, due to make up games, the home-and-home series (CH@NH on 1/31 and NH@CH on 2/7) has been cancelled.

On the girls’ side, much of the attention will be focused on Hoggard and their perfect Mideastern record.  The Lady Vikings will be visited by Jacksonville and White Oak on Thursday and Friday as they look to stretch their undefeated league record to 8-0 with a pair of wins.
