On Tuesday, the Bucs welcomed Jacksonville to Michael Jordan Gymnasium and after another sparkling performance by their two-headed scoring monster, they sent the Cardinals home with their first Mideastern Conference loss of the season.
After dropping their first three league contests, Laney extended their conference winning streak to four games and upset first place Jacksonville 72-64. It was a shaky start to the season for the Bucs, but Coach Fred Lynch has his boys playing their best ball of the season.
Power forward Anthony Alston poured home 22 points against a front line consisting of a 6′8″ center. Alston is looking more confident on the low block as the season progresses, and while he doesn’t always have the height advantage, he uses his frame well to create space both to score and clear the glass.
Antwan Bosier, pictured above, slashed his way to 22 points as well. The ability for he, and others like Mark Rice and TJ Lynch, to shoot from the outside and also take it to the rim, has defenses on their heels.
Laney will look to improve to 5-3 in the league, but will have to play another first place team to do so. With Jacksonville’s loss and New Hanover’s win, the Wildcats are tied a top the conference standings and will provide Laney the opportunity to bump off two #1’s in the same week.
On the girls’ side, Laney pulled out a 42-36 win. Down 18-13 at the half, the Bucs got things going offensively in the second half as the outscored Jacksonville 29-18. Laney improved to 8-9 overall and 3-4 in the Mideastern while Jacksonville dipped to 12-6, 5-2.
Kabrina Truesdale led the way offensively for Laney with 19 points. New Hanover, with only one conference loss, will be a tough test for the Lady Bucs on Friday.
