The calendar said “July 10th” but it was “Father’s Day” for Jamie Watson. The Hammerheads forward recorded a goal and three assists as Wilmington got back to its winning ways with a 4-0 victory over the Western Mass. Pioneers.
Mark Briggs opened the scoring in the 28th minute with a knuckle-ball shot that eluded the Pioneers’ keeper Robert Shuttleworth. It looked like Shuttleworth had it covered, but the ball dipped and squirted under him and across the goal line.
“I didn’t see it go in,” Briggs said. “I had turned to run back up field when I heard the yelling. I’ll take it.”
Wilmington’s next goal was from another unlikely source. In the 67th minute, defender Colin Falvey took a Watson pass in the box, moved to his right and slotted it between Shuttleworth and the left post.
Four minutes later, Watson sent a sweet cross through to Kenny Bundy who buried the ball into the open net.
In the 84th minute, with the Pioneers pushing forward, Falvey sent a long clearing pass past midfield to Watson. In stride, Watson dribbled once and sent a shot from the top of the box that rippled the net.
After a brief congratulations from teammates, Watson ran to the Main Grandstand and found his dad at the railing. They shared a hug and celebrated Watson’s big game.
It was also a special night for former Hammerheads captain George Corrie. The organization recognized him for a decade of play in the midfield and declared the southeast corner of the field will be now known as “Corrie’s Corner.”
The Hammerheads are back in action on Friday, July 17th, as they take on Real Maryland. The Hammerheads are hoping to celebrate Mother’s Day as well, Watson’s mom is making the trip to Wilmington for the match.
