WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNC Wilmington rising freshman Tyler McSwain was named Coastal Plain League Pitcher-of-the-Week after shutting down the hometown Sharks last week at Legion Field for the Peninsula Pilots.
McSwain limited the Sharks to one hit in a complete game shutout effort on July 9 and fanned a season-high 10. The righthander carried a perfect game into the seventh before allowing a single by UNCW teammate Mike Rooney to open the inning. McSwain would face the minimum through nine and closed out the contest with a double play in the ninth.
McSwain moved into the rotation early in the season and has responded with a 4-1 record and a stingy 1.59 ERA in 45 1/3 innings. In seven appearances, he’s struck out 36 and limited opposing hitters to a .204 batting average and just seven extra base hits.
The Coastal Plain League All-Star game will be played on July 20 at Legion Field. Rosters for the midseason classic will be announced July 14 and 15.
