Day One Kind To UNCW During Tennis Invitational

uncw-tennis-girl-webWILMINGTON, N.C. – The UNC Wilmington men’s and women’s tennis teams combined for a 12-4 record in singles and a 9-2 mark in doubles on the opening day of the UNCW-RBC Wealth Management Tennis Invitational Friday at the Country Club of Landfall’s Drysdale Tennis Center.

The women’s team went 6-2 in singles and pushed four players into the semifinals of their respective brackets. Senior Kayla Schwenk knocked off Georgetown’s Caroline Kuehn, 6-1, 6-1, in A1 Singles, sophomore Christina Lee outlasted Kuni Dorn of Kansas, 6-0, 5-7, 10-5, in A2 Singles, freshman Christina Riley cruised past Maria Martinez of Kansas, 6-4, 6-4, in B1 Singles and senior Hartley Collins topped Furman’s Olivia Maurice, 6-2, 6-4.

In doubles, the women won four of five matches. Junior Lindsay Leblang and senior Lauren Fuenning edged Ekaterina Morozova and Victoria Khanevskaya of Kansas, 9-8 (3), to advance to Saturday’s semifinals against Monica Arguello and Lauren Kline of Furman.

The men, meanwhile, also enjoyed a solid first day, going 5-2 in singles play. Junior Kinshuk Sharma and sophomore Ryan Ybarra both moved on to the quarterfinals of the A Singles Flight with straight set victories. Sharma halted Georgia State’s Jackson Moore, 7-5 (5), 6-4, and Ybarra routed East Carolina’s Bryan Oakley, 6-3, 6-1. In Flight B Singles, freshman Chris Cooprider of UNCW rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 verdict over Virginia Tech’s Zachary Pine and junior Illia Ziamtsou blasted ECU’s John Schmitt, 6-2, 6-1.

In other men’s matches, newcomer Kosta Blank advanced to the semifinals of the C Flight and freshman Max Ando Hirsch romped over ECU’s Nathaniel Smiley, 6-1, 6-1, in the D Flight.

UNCW’s men won five of six doubles matches, playing three teams in the semifinals on Saturday.

Play begins early Saturday and continues throughout the day before wrapping up with finals on Sunday. Admission is free.
