Things only got tighter Tuesday night among the four Wilmington area high schools as they duke it out for Mideastern soccer bragging rights.
New Hanover took a 2-0 lead on a goal by Tom Hicks only to see Hoggard stage a furious rally late in the second half. After trimming the lead to 2-1, Nick Scarff got loose inside the box and was hauled down resulting in a penalty shot, just as time was about to expire. Billy Davis stepped up to take the kick and drilled it into the back of the net. Neither team was able to score in overtime as both seemed content with a 2-2 tie.
With Laney’s 2-1 win over Ashley, the standings only got tighter. New Hanover is still a top the list at 4-1-1 but they hold the slimmest of margins. Laney is second at 5-2 while Hoggard and Ashley are both 4-2-1.
Tune in Sunday for the Cape Fear Sports Report Sunday at noon on WWAY for complete highlights.
