WILMINGTON, N.C. – Junior center John Fields of UNC Wilmington has been named the Colonial Athletic Association’s Co-Player-of-the-Week after powering the Seahawks to a pair of high-scoring men’s basketball victories over non-conference opponents VMI and Elon last week.

Fields, a 6-9, 235-pound performer from Fayetteville, N.C., averaged 18.0 points, 11.5 rebounds and 3.0 blocks as the Seahawks raced past VMI, 115-95, and walloped Elon, 86-56. He shared honors with Drexel’s Jamie Harris, who helped the Dragons post a 3-1 record with wins over Pennsylvania and Vermont.

UNCW, 3-4, returns to action Saturday with its CAA opener against George Mason at Trask Coliseum.

“We’re very happy for John because he has worked extremely hard,” said Benny Moss, UNCW’s fourth-year skipper. “He’s the consummate team player. His individual statistics were great, but he was more excited with picking up the wins and helping the team get better. He is very deserving of this honor.”

A graduate of Jack Britt High School, Fields went a gaudy 17-for-20 from the field for 85 percent in last week’s two games. He led the team in scoring with 22 points on 10-for-11 shooting with 14 rebounds in the VMI victory and tied for scoring honors again with 14 points and nine rebounds in the Elon triumph.

Fields had four blocks vs. VMI and two more against Elon to raise his league-leading total to 15 on the season.
