WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNC Wilmington held Campbell scoreless over the first 6:31 of the game and breezed to a lopsided 79-59 victory over the Camels in the 95th meeting between the two in-state rivals Monday at Trask Coliseum.
The Seahawks, 4-5, used their decided size advantage to block a season-high 13 shots and win for the third time in their last four outings. The Camels dropped their second straight and now stand at 5-3.
Junior playmaker Chad Tomko led the Seahawks with a game-high 21 points and added six rebounds and five assists in a solid outing. Senior guard Montez Downey chipped in 11 points for the Seahawks, including 10 points in a strong first half effort as the Seahawks raced out to a 39-16 advantage.
Senior forward Miles Taylor paced Campbell with 13 points while the Camels struggled from the field, shooting 35.5 percent from the floor and 51.7 percent from the foul line
Campbell had its streak of 363 games with a 3-pointer snapped when the Camels went 0-for-6 from behind the arc. The streak dated back to Dec. 27, 1996, when CU went 0-for-12 at Boise State.
Campbell trailed, 39-16, at halftime and scored six straight points to slice the deficit to 43-26 at 17:27 on a layup by senior Jonathan Rodriguez before the Seahawks pulled away for good.
The Seahawks ran the lead to 25 points following a 7-0 run early in the final period. A three-ball by junior forward Dominique Lacy kicked off the spurt and red-shirt freshman Will Ohuaregbe’s twisting layup at 15:28 pushed the margin to 51-26.
Freshman center Matt Wilson gave UNCW its largest lead of the game when the 6-11 post player slammed a dunk as the lead ballooned to 70-44 at 3:47.
UNCW capitalized on Campbell’s cold shooting early in the contest to build a big margin and move to 20-2 against the Camels at Trask Coliseum. After Johnny Wolf, who finished with seven points and four assists, connected on a floater with 13:48 remaining in the opening period to give the Seahawks a 9-0 cushion, Campbell finally got on the board at 13:29 on senior William Kossangue’s bucket in the lane.
The Seahawks led by as many as 23 points in the first half after the Camels struggled through 25 percent shooting. Senior guard Darion Jeralds connected on both ends of a bonus situation with 1:28 left to give UNCW a 39-16 bulge at intermission.
The Seahawks wrap up a three-game homestand on Wednesday with a 7 p.m. tipoff against Wake Forest in a nationally televised game on ESPNU. The Camels entertain Jacksonville on Saturday at 3:15 p.m.
GAME NOTES: The last time a Seahawk squad held an opponent without a trey was during the 2001-02 campaign when UNCW accomplished the feat against Towson twice (0-for-5 and 0-for-10) … John Fields finished with eight points and nine rebounds while blocking a season-high six shots … UNCW moved to 4-0 when shooting over 50 percent from the field … The Seahawks’ 28 trips to the foul line represented the most free throws since attempting 37 free throws against VMI … Campbell owned a 42-28 scoring advantage in the paint and converted 15 UNCW turnovers into 16 points … Every Seahawk player saw action in the contest.
