BOSTON, Mass. - Streaking Northeastern shot 56.7 percent in the first half to build a comfortable lead and extended its winning streak to nine games by whipping UNC Wilmington, 79-56, on Saturday at Matthews Arena. The women were at home Sunday, and while the game was much tighter, the overtime period was unkind to the Lady Seahawks.
The senior-laden Huskies hiked their record to 11-7 overall, 6-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association, and have not lost since a 75-60 defeat to Western Michigan on Dec. 23 in Honolulu. With the new scheduling pod in effect, NU and UNCW meet again on Feb. 16 at Trask Coliseum.
The Seahawks opened a challenging three-game road trip by dropping their third straight contest to dip to 6-11 and 2-5.
“Northeastern was the more aggressive team,” said UNCW coach Benny Moss. “They came out more physical and controlled the tempo of the game. I thought we played better in the second half and have something to build on.”
Junior point guard Chaisson Allen led three NU players in double figures with 14 points and added seven assists. Senior center Nkem Ojougboh added 12 points and six rebounds and senior forward Manny Adako scored 10 for the Huskies.
Senior guard Matt Janning, NU’s leading scorer at 16.0 ppg, was held to a season-low six points on 2-for-6 from the floor and 2-for-7 at the free throw line.
Junior guard Chad Tomko poured in 17 points to pace UNCW, which lost for the third time in as many appearances in Boston. Junior center John Fields recorded his fifth double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds off the bench.
With his point total on Saturday, Tomko became the newest member of the 1,000-point club at UNCW. The Charlotte product has now scored 1,004 points in 81 career appearances since joining the program in 2007-08.
The Seahawks shot 30.4 percent to trail early, but bounced back with 53.8 percent in the second half to finish at 42.9 percent for the game.
Moss shook up the lineup, inserting his eighth different opening five this season, but the Huskies responded early and often. NU scored 13 of the first 19 points of the game to get out of the gate quickly and then used a 14-0 run to build an insurmountable 41-21 margin at intermission.
After Keith Rendleman’s free throw cut NU’s lead to 13-7 with 12:45 left in the first half, Adako key a 14-point rally with a basket in the paint at 12:28. Alwayne Bigby’s layup with 6:49 left in the period then completed the spurt and gave the Huskies a 27-7 cushion.
NU’s largest lead in the half came with 2:22 left when reserve forward Dinko Marshavelski connected on a pair of free throws.
The Huskies poured it on the second half, pushing the lead to as many as 35 points, before the final margin. Reserve guard Joel Smith’s tip-in with 7:24 showing gave NU its largest lead of the game, 70-45.
The Seahawks play the second game of their three-game road swing on Monday when they take on Virginia in Charlottesville at 7 p.m. The Huskies visit Towson on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. contest at the Towson Center.

On Sunday, the women fell in OT as Hofstra closed out the contest on a 16-4 run to erase a three-point deficit in the final seconds of regulation and record a 78-69 overtime victory over UNC Wilmington in Colonial Athletic Association women’s basketball action at Trask Coliseum.
The Pride improved to 9-8 on the season and 2-3 in CAA play while the Seahawks slipped to 6-10 overall and 1-4 in league action.
Freshman Shante Evans and junior Jess Fuller both posted double-doubles to lead a Hofstra attack that was 28-of-61 from the floor for the contest and held a commanding 47-35 advantage on the glass. Evans recorded a game-high 19 points and matched her career-high with 18 rebounds for her league-leading eighth double-double of the season while Fuller poured in a season-high 18 points and added 12 caroms for third double-double of the campaign.
Senior Sam Brigham joined the duo in double figures with 17 points as she was 3-for-6 from three-point range to guide a Pride attack that knocked down five of its 11 attempts from beyond the arc.
Senior Greta Luksyte equaled her season-high with 18 points to lead four UNCW players in double figures as senior Casey Sawhook chipped in 12 points and juniors Brittany Blackwell and Martha White pitched in 11 and 10 points, respectively. White also grabbed a team-best eight rebounds while junior Treasure Johnson posted a career-high five steals.
Trailing 65-62 in the final seconds of regulation, Hofstra was able to force overtime when sophomore guard Nicole Capurso hit a three-pointer from in front of the Pride bench with 15 seconds remaining to tie the game at 65-all. The Seahawks had a chance to win the game on its last possession, but White’s jumper from the right-side hit the far side of the rim and rolled out.
After back-to-back turnovers by the Pride and a missed free-throw by Sawhook to start the extra session, Hofstra got the board first on a pair of free-throws from sophomore Candice Bellocchio and used a three-pointer from Brigham and a jumper from Evans to push its lead to seven, 72-65, with just over two minutes remaining.
The Seahawks were able to get on the board seconds later on a jumper by White, but that would be as close as UNCW would get as the Pride hit six straight free-throws to build an 11-point cushion, 78-67, with 22 seconds remaining. A pair of free-throws by Luksyte at the nine-second mark would determine the final margin.
Hofstra was a perfect 10-for-10 in its shot attempts in overtime as it made both of its field-goal attempts and was a perfect 8-for-8 at the charity stripe. UNCW was just 1-for-7 from the floor in the extra session and 2-for-3 from the free-throw line.
In the first half, a pair of free-throws from senior guard Whitney Simmons at the 16:25 mark sparked an 8-2 UNCW spurt that gave the Seahawks a 16-8 lead.
Hofstra responded to the Seahawks spurt, rattling off seven unanswered points to start an 11-4 run that pulled the Pride within one, 20-19. UNCW countered the Hofstra run with six straight points to regain their seven point edge, 26-19, before the Pride tallied the final six points of the frame to make it a 26-25 contest at halftime.
Early in the second half, UNCW used a 7-2 spurt to erase a two-point deficit and build a 37-32 cushion before the Pride responded with an 8-2 run to regain the lead at 40-39.
The Seahawks used a three-pointer from Sawhook and a jumper from Luksyte to rebuild their two-possession cushion, 44-40. The Pride followed the five point spurt by scoring six of the next eight points to take a 47-46 lead when UNCW counted with a 6-2 stretch of its own to build a 54-49 advantage with 5:37 on the clock.
A put-back layup by Evans on Hofstra’s next possession ignited a 10-2 run that would give the Pride a 59-56 lead. The Seahawks knotted the score at 59-all moments later on a jumper by Luksyte and a free-throw by Blackwell on consecutive possessions before a free-throw by Bellocchio gave Hofstra a slim 60-59 edge.
The two teams traded the lead on their next possessions as Sawhook hit two free throws and Evans put home a fastbreak layup when a three-pointer by Sawhook at the 1:01 mark gave the Seahawks a 64-62 advantage.
After the Pride missed a three-pointer on its next trip down the floor, UNCW had a chance to build on its lead as Sawhook was fouled and sent to the free-throw line. Sawhook made the first attempt but missed the second, setting up Capurso’s game-tying three-pointer.
Both teams return to action Thursday with CAA contests. UNCW is at Towson for an 11:30 a.m. tip-off while Hofstra hosts William & Mary in a 7 p.m. start.
